5 Ways to Enhance Your Kitchen

Even if you can’t cook, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a spacious kitchen. Most people spend a lot of time in the kitchen for various reasons. Aside from the family room (or living room), the kitchen is the social room in the home.  Whether it is for making a cup of coffee or baking cookies with the kids; spending time in the kitchen in an important aspect of living the family life.

Hence, with so much time being spent in the kitchen, it only makes sense to keep the kitchen looking pristine.  Guests often gravitate to the kitchen when invited to your home.  Have you ever been to someone’s home who doesn’t have doors on the cupboards?  Perhaps they didn’t finish their kitchen remodeling or just find it easier to access the dishes and food.  This is one unsightly no-no for the kitchen area.

Actually, expanding your kitchen is a very smart way to add value to your home. The Appraisal Institute puts the kitchen area of high precedence concerning people’s decisions of whether or not to buy a home.  Some people buy because of the kitchen, so it’s important to have one that is functional and appealing visually.  Going from a practical kitchen to an entertaining kitchen is likely to pay for itself someday when the house goes up for sale.

This is good news for anybody, good cook or not. This doesn’t mean that you have to go out and break the bank and order exotic yellow canary ceramic tiles imported from Italy to upgrade your kitchen. Below are some cool tips to give your kitchen a facelift:

  • If you have a big dinner table, it needs to go. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up eating in the kitchen. You should go with a more conservative approach and perhaps consider a dinner-style booth. This will open up at least 8 – 10 feet of space.
  • If possible, take out any wall in between the dining room and kitchen. It’s a very cost effective way to add some serious room to your kitchen.
  • If you can’t afford new cabinetry, consider purchasing new knob and drawer pulls for all the cupboards and drawers.  It’s a fast and affordable way to make your kitchen cabinets look new with just some hardware.
  • Speaking of the cabinets, if they look old or outdated, you can refinish them with stain or paint to make them look fresh again.
  • Painting the kitchen or putting up a wallpaper border will freshen up the color scheme and will make your kitchen look brand new.  Choose colors that are light because they give you a breezy, airy feeling as opposed to dark colors that feel closed in.

You will enjoy spending time in the kitchen a lot more if it feels good and you don’t have to be an interior decorator to make it look brand new again.  Some plants or candles, a nice piece of art and a thorough cleaning job wouldn’t hurt, either.  Next to the living room, the kitchen is the place to entertain guests and family.  This is just one of many ideas to enjoy your home and add value at the same time.
